Explain to students how to search for information on the web. Explain the importance
of citing sources in a research document. Give students the "Saving Information" task
list. In their computers, students will open Notepad and type their names and today's
date. Minimize Notepad. Students will then open Internet Explorer. They will navigate
to http://www.yahooligans.com in their browser. Each student will choose type in the
ocean animal of their choice in the text field and then press Search. Choose a
resulting web site. Find an important fact about the ocean animal that they want to
save. Highlight the relevant fact and copy it (right click the highlighted information and
click copy). Click Notepad in your taskbar to restore Notepad. Paste the fact (right
click mouse and click paste) into the document. Return to the web site and highlight
the URL of the site. Go back to Notepad and paste the source following the copied
fact. Back at the web site find the title of the document, and author. Copy and paste
those to your Notepad document. Return to your web search and find another site.
Repeat steps until you have three relevant facts. Print your Notepad document or let
students save to a disk for later use.
